“Courage is not simply one of the virtues,

but the form of every virtue at the testing point.”

–C.S. Lewis

How often does daring show up in my life?

When did I last call on mettle

Or march out stoutheartedly

To meet the habitual challenges of the day?

These brave-words,

Are they not reserved for the exceedingly dramatic and difficult?

No, they are not.

Audacity and Fortitude must meet and marry

In a thousand quiet corners of this world;

In the very private places of our lives.

Places where grace-gifts are born:

Faithfulness that leads to sacrificial mercy-acts that meet another’s need,

Kindness that accepts others’ flaws with patience and chooses to forgive,

Joyful thanksgiving that whispers gratitude on the lean days and makes a way to share,

Self-control that holds back wounding words and deeds- blessing rather than cursing,

Love that bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

These are acts of unnatural valor

Requiring tremendous grit.

Father God, Giver of Every Good Thing,

Give us courage for each moment,

For without it,

Too much goes undone.
